THE INTRA-UTERINE CONTRACEPTIVE DEVICE:

WHAT IS AN IUCD/LOOP?

The IUCD or Loop is a small plastic or copper device that is placed in the womb and acts as a long term contraceptive method.

HOW DOES THE IUD WORK?

·         The IUD works chiefly by preventing the sperm from reaching the egg.

·         It also prevents a fertilized egg from being implanted in the wall of the womb.

Note: Most makes of IUCD/LOOP function without hormonal components however there are IUCD/LOOP devices that do have a hormonal component.

HOW RELIABLE IS THE IUCD/LOOP?

Depending on the type of IUCD/LOOP it is from 98% effective.

ADVANTAGES:

·         It is a reversible long term contraceptive method.

·         Once placed inside the womb it is effective immediately.

·         The insertion  is a quick and simple procedure.

·          It can be immediately reversed – once removed the client will return to fertility straight away.

·         The IUCD only needs to be replaced after several years, depending on the type.

·         It is very effective and there is very little to remember.

·         It does not interfere with sex.

·         It helps increase sexual enjoyment because there is no need to worry about falling pregnant.

·         The IUCD can be inserted immediately after childbirth or after an abortion (as long as there are no signs of any infection.)

·         It can be used while breast feeding.

·         It can be used through menopause.

·         There are no interactions with medication.

·         It can be used as an Emergency Contraceptive.

WHEN IS THE IUCD/LOOP SUITABLE?

  • The IUCD/LOOP can be used by all women – even those that have not had a child.
  • The IUCD/LOOP can be used by women even if they are HIV+.
  • It can be inserted at any stage of the menstrual cycle.

·         Common side-effects are the possibility of:

1.       Menstrual changes which may occur in the 1st 3 months.

2.       Longer and heavier menstrual periods.

3.       Bleeding or spotting between periods.

4.       More cramps and pain during periods.

·         IUCD must be inserted / removed by a Health care professional.

·         May come out spontaneously but can be replaced.

·         The woman should check the position of the strings monthly.
