THE INTRA-UTERINE CONTRACEPTIVE DEVICE:
(ALSO KNOWN AS IUD/IUCD OR LOOP)
WHAT IS AN IUCD/LOOP?
The IUCD or Loop is a small plastic or copper device that is placed in the womb and acts as a long term contraceptive method.
HOW DOES THE IUD WORK?
· The IUD works chiefly by preventing the sperm from reaching the egg.
· It also prevents a fertilized egg from being implanted in the wall of the womb.
Note: Most makes of IUCD/LOOP function without hormonal components however there are IUCD/LOOP devices that do have a hormonal component.
HOW RELIABLE IS THE IUCD/LOOP?
Depending on the type of IUCD/LOOP it is from 98% effective.
ADVANTAGES:
· It is a reversible long term contraceptive method.
· Once placed inside the womb it is effective immediately.
· The insertion is a quick and simple procedure.
· It can be immediately reversed – once removed the client will return to fertility straight away.
· The IUCD only needs to be replaced after several years, depending on the type.
· It is very effective and there is very little to remember.
· It does not interfere with sex.
· It helps increase sexual enjoyment because there is no need to worry about falling pregnant.
· The IUCD can be inserted immediately after childbirth or after an abortion (as long as there are no signs of any infection.)
· It can be used while breast feeding.
· It can be used through menopause.
· There are no interactions with medication.
· It can be used as an Emergency Contraceptive.
WHEN IS THE IUCD/LOOP SUITABLE?
AREAS OF CONCERN:
· Common side-effects are the possibility of:
1. Menstrual changes which may occur in the 1st 3 months.
2. Longer and heavier menstrual periods.
3. Bleeding or spotting between periods.
4. More cramps and pain during periods.
· Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
· Some temporary pain and bleeding or spotting may occur immediately after IUCD insertion.
· It could cause/aggravate anaemia.
· IUCD must be inserted / removed by a Health care professional.
· May come out spontaneously but can be replaced.
· The woman should check the position of the strings monthly.
WHEN WOULD A WOMAN FIND THE IUCD/LOOP UNSUITABLE AS A CONTRACEPTIVE METHOD?
· If they are pregnant.
· If they have very heavy vaginal bleeding during menstruation.
· If they experience unexplained vaginal bleeding ( bleeding other than her menstruation ).
· During a time period between 48 hours up to 4 weeks after child birth.
· If she has a severe infection within 42 days after child birth.
· In the presence of sexually transmitted infections.
· If they are at risk for sexually transmitted infections.
