PAP SMEAR:
WHAT IS A PAP SMEAR?
A Pap Smear is a procedure whereby a sample of cells are taken from the cervix and sent to a laboratory for analysis.
It will help in the detection of vaginal infections including pre-cancer and cancer lesions.
WHY SHOULD A WOMAN HAVE A PAP SMEAR?
In the event that a vaginal infection is detected on the Pap Smear, it can be treated at the clinic. Any other abnormalities will be referred to the nearest hospital/gynecologist for further management.
PROCEDURAL INFORMATION:
1. The Pap Smear takes 5-10 minutes.
2. It is performed by a Professional Nurse.
3. Cells are removed from the cervix-the mouth of the womb - and sent to the laboratory for analysis.
4. The results are analysed and, in the event of any irregularities or disease, management options can be pursued.
Please note: The Pap Smear and the “womb scrape” (Dilatation and Curettage) are 2 different procedures done for different reasons.
